Our Research led us to Vantage

In Thailand, there are a myriad of TEFL courses offered throughout the country. So, with that said, which one does a prospective ESL teacher choose? My wife and I read all of the reviews. Some said, “play on the beach while you take our course,” while another one mentioned, “take in the sites of the city as you learn.” Well, for us, their slogans just sounded like it didn’t facilitate any rigorous or comprehensive learning.

We then decided to just visit the different schools. As we researched, it started to boil down to only a few. For us, they had to be internationally recognized and accredited by a reputable educational Institution. Secondly, they had to have more than just a couple of hours of actual teaching practice. Thirdly, the trainers not only had to meet, but exceed stringent academic requirements for teaching ESL.

Finally, we found a TEFL course that met all of these expectations and more, Vantage. The course training was highly professional and vigorous. We can say, “Forget about your weekends for the duration.”

Class size was relatively small so we received personal instruction all along the way. The main instructor, Chris, has an extensive background in teaching English. He is an accomplished language teacher focused on the students’ overall learning for gist of the entire process of teaching others a second language. In addition, he has a great sense of humor which makes the class fun and interesting.

The other trainers were just as skilled and proficient. We learned how to format a “power resume” to help a prospective teacher stand out amongst other applicants to help land your first job. Furthermore, we had a trainer that focused on some basic conversation of the Thai language as well as some of the important cultural norms.

Besides receiving detailed education on lesson plans, grammar review, and classroom management to name just a few; overall, we feel that Vantage has provided us the necessary tools and a solid foundation to begin teaching ESL to others. If all of this sounds like it meets your certification needs in a TEFL course, then look no farther, attend Vantage!

A sceptical teacher is born

I worked for a corporate insurance company (Momentum) for the past 10 years in South Africa, but was always interested in teaching from a young age. I was a bit sceptical to resign from my job and move to Thailand to complete my TEFL/TESOL course with Vantage training centre based in Bangkok. I have emailed Kevin (Director of the course) with all my concerns regarding their institute and what they had to offer that is different from other TEFL programme out there. He was very professional and explained that the course will be very intensive but rewarding at the end.

My first day on course was very interested to meet an excellent trainer and the best fellow trainees that I could have ever asked for. We immediately gelled together learned about each other’s culture and country. The course was structured well, content; teaching approaches and time awarded to each lesson was well executed. I start off with no teaching experience and not confident to stand in front of live student. My first teaching lesson was good but not great because I was very nervous. I have learned good technics and various methodologies to use while teaching English language. I can now design a lesson plan, work sheets, flash cards, games and power-point presentation. Technology becomes a big part of our teaching aids and I’m now able to use it accordingly for each lesson.

Vantage has launched my teaching careers and developed me to be a professional English teacher. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have worked with amazing people and build lifelong relationships from this programme. I would recommend anyone who’s planning to come to Thailand to teach English to complete their TEFL Certification with Vantage’s programme. If you’re willing to work hard and dedicate yourself fully to the 4 weeks in class course you won’t regret investing your money and time to be competent and become a certified English teacher.

Before deciding on taking a TEFL course with Vantage I had researched several other TEFL courses but none of them seemed to stand out the way Vantage did. I was less interested in lying on a beach or riding an elephant and more interested in putting all my focus on learning how to teach properly. Vantage was exactly what I was looking for. An intensive course that pushes you out of your comfort zone and draws out the very best of you. If you are looking for the easy route, take a relaxing TEFL course, lye on the beach for a month and get your piece of paper at the end of it, but if you actually want to learn how to teach properly and you are prepared to do the work then Vantage is the way to go. Vantage has exceeded my expectations in every way.

Going into the course I had a list of personal concerns I wanted to address, some of which I thought were insurmountable, but every one of my concerns were dealt with in ways that I would have never thought of. I thought I was too young, I thought I wasn’t boisterous enough, wasn’t qualified enough, the list goes on.

Vantage seemingly never takes a black or white approach to anything, they are able to view a circumstance from a different perspective, a different “vantage” point ;), allowing them to transmute the disadvantage into an advantage. Whatever “disadvantage” you are allowing to hold you back may not actually be as justified as you believe it to be.

The Vantage class sizes are small so the personal attention you receive is abundant. What really blew me away was how determined the trainers were to go above and beyond, putting everything they had into the delivery of the course even though the class sizes were so small. To me this shows that the Vantage trainers are motivated by their desire to do the best job they are capable of rather than the financial compensation they receive for doing so.

I would recommend Vantage to anyone who is serious about developing their ability to teach and is willing to do the work.

I started this course with no prior experience as a teacher. I didn’t think I was good at speaking in front of people and am generally quite a reserved and shy person. I thought these aspects of my personality would cause me a lot of difficulty in becoming a teacher, but this course gave me the skills I needed to confidently teach a lesson. It showed me that language teaching is more about motivating students to speak, and not like delivering a lecture or presentation. Chris taught me how to structure, plan, and execute lessons and how to keep the attention and interest of a class, and Kevin helped me navigate the job market and write my resume.

One thing that appealed to me from the beginning was how small the classes at Vantage are. Their website promised there would be no more than 8 trainees on my course, but when I arrived, there were only 2 other people! We all got the individual attention we needed, and analyzed our own and each other’s teaching in a productive and meaningful way.

I had some rewarding experiences during the practicum sessions in particular. Without the 6 hours of teaching we were required to do, I don’t think I would feel half as confident as I do about becoming a teacher. It made me very nervous, and the first lesson or two were frankly quite discouraging, but by the sixth lesson I felt much more confident and knew what to expect from the class and from myself. The feedback from Chris and from my classmates was encouraging, productive, and invaluable.

Overall, the course was challenging, engaging, and rewarding. If you want to take this course, then be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone, and you will have some rewarding experiences. Facing a classroom was very hard at first, and there was a lot of work to stay on top of, but it’s all part of the intensive and immersive experience that Vantage provides.

I found this school in the ITTT Network and I choose it for its location.

I was a little concerned about teaching English as not native English speaker and the idea that this could be a problem followed me all along the first week of my training.

The school environment was really nice and the trainer very professional. I always felt comfortable during all the lessons, also

the professionalism of my trainer was the key that turned my initial uncomfortable feeling into self-confidence and allowed me to follow this course with success.

Throughout the lessons and with the aid of all the materials I had the chance to learn, improve and practice my teachng skills as much as my English itself. We had 6 hours of real teaching in a school that really made the difference in knowing what to do and what don’t. Real experience is the key point in learning how to teach.

This program reinforced my self-confidence and gave me all needed tools to overcome my weakness to be a good teacher, able to transmit English as a very useful life skill to someone else.

I can definitely say that my experience in this school gave me all the necessary skills I was looking for to be a teacher.

There are many strengths to Vantage’s certification program: the knowledge and professionalism of the instructors, who take a genuine interest in the competency and abilities of their trainees, and the amount and sequencing of the materials covered, which were appropriate. I’ve taught for for 15 years at home and abroad, and a TEFL certification was something I just wanted to add to my repertoire. The course exceeded my expectations.

Another meaningful aspect of this program was class size. Large classes always involve much more management and less actual classroom instruction. Vantage struck the appropriate balance balance between the two. The same balance was achieved between in-class study and the practicum. I would recommend Vantage’s program without reservation to any prospective teacher or someone just looking to brush up on outdated skills.

During my research on TEFL courses available in Thailand, Vantage webpage was remarkably appealing to my eyes because there were literally a lot of information about the school itself, the methodologies of the course and ESL markets. While some other schools put many pictures and mention about tourism attractions of Thailand or fun activities outside of the course, this school’s website keeps being professional and focusing on the quality of TEFL course. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying about good or bad of those types of webpages. I just liked Vantage’s professional approach and their strong aim of the course that I saw through the webpage. And they were, indeed. The course book and additional supplement book cover from grammar to uses of technologies as teaching aids. These books are something that you would want to refer for the rest of your teaching career. Vantage trainers and staff are always supportive of every trainee which is one of the impressive experiences throughout the course. It is definitely worthy to take the class even if you are quite not sure about being an English teacher because there are many universally applicable methods of teaching something and the course even provide us techniques of job interviews and writing resume. You would also be surprised at the depth of English as language. If you are a non-native speaker and hesitates to take TEFL course, I, as a non-native speaker, have one thing to tell you; Don’t worry, just do it! Although TEFL course is quite intensive, Chris & Kevin, who are the trainer and the manager of the course, are always ready to support you.

Thank you for such an incredible experience at Vantage and I definitely recommend this school to anyone looking for TEFL training opportunity.

Teaching ESL has been something I have wanted to do for many years. I first gained some experience teaching English to a group of young students through a volunteer program in Cambodia. At that point, I lacked any type of formal training and had to “wing it,” while trying to teach a classroom of 16 students. Although I absolutely loved the experience, I knew that if I wanted to seriously become a professional teacher that I would need to be trained through a TEFL course.

I first tried an online TEFL course through a different organization, which I ended up dropping early on. I didn’t like the structure of the course and felt that I wasn’t gaining anything from it. After some time, I started doing a lot of research online for a TEFL training course that could give me everything I was looking for as a trainee. I then came across Vantage-Siam TEFL training in Bangkok. From everything I read I felt that the program was what I had been looking for; little did I know at that point it was everything and so much more!

I can’t express how happy I am that I chose this training center. From the moment I contacted the director, Kevin, he was incredibly helpful with every question that I had before I arrived to Bangkok. On the first day of training, Kevin personally greeted me with a warm welcome and he took the time to get to know me as well as give me an orientation about Bangkok. He also happily answered any questions I had. I was already very impressed by how friendly, professional, helpful and knowledgeable he was. Not only was he there to assist in any way he could throughout the course, but he also trained my class on how to build a “Power Resume.” And I am telling you, it’s more powerful than you can imagine! That alone is an extremely important tool to have, as that’s the first phase in getting through to any job you apply for. Just to give you an idea, I had sent my old resume out to several companies before and didn’t have one person contact me with any interest to schedule an interview. After creating my power resume and sending it off to a handful of schools, I was literally contacted by every single one, all of which were very eager to schedule interviews. So thank you, Kevin!

The course was taught by Chris, who I also cannot say enough about. He is an outstanding trainer who cares a tremendous amount about his trainees. It’s hard to come by people such as him these days. The 4-week course is highly intensive between all the training, observed teaching practice, lesson planning, and portfolio you have the build. There is so much information covered in such a short amount of time. I remember my first day feeling a little overwhelmed thinking, “How am I going to do ALL this in four weeks?” Chris does an excellent job of guiding you through it all and taking it step-by-step. He also gives you plenty of helpful feedback through your observed teaching practice, which helps you improve significantly with every new lesson you teach.

It’s incredible how much I have learned in a relatively short amount of time. I now feel very confident as a professional teacher and ready to take on any type of teaching position that comes my way. I was nowhere close to feeling that way before my training. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Chris with the level of experience he has, his knowledge of the industry and how he always goes above and beyond with every aspect of the training. He will do everything in his power to ensure you are prepared and confident with teaching English, as well as making sure you are enjoying the course. As a side note, he has a great sense of humor, which makes for a much more enjoyable training, considering how intense it can be! But really, I feel fortunate to have learned from the best.

I could go on about so many other positive aspects regarding Vantage’s TEFL training in Bangkok, but all you need to know is if you are serious about wanting to pursue a professional career as an English teacher, take the course here. It doesn’t matter if you have zero experience or knowledge or lack the confidence, I can assure you that you will come out a different person and ready to take on the world! The entire staff at Vantage is outstanding and will be right there with you every step of the way to see to it that you exceed your goals and have fun along the way. I can confidently say that choosing Vantage’s TEFL training in Bangkok was the best decision I could have made to prepare, motivate and excite me to begin my teaching career. I recommend it to anyone!

I did a lot of research on TEFL course providers in Thailand and learned the contrary to what some of these courses claim, the Thai Ministry of Education does not endorse any TEFL courses or specifically license TEFL training schools.

So I focused my attention on an international accreditation for my TEFL. Vantage attracted me as they offered American University accreditation from Fort Hays State University in Kansas.

Vantage’s TEFL course was intensive, but always engaging. We were given an entire course book and additional supplementary materials to get through in 4 weeks!

The observed teaching practices we did with university students was the soul of the training. And while the teaching methodologies are significant, you only develop your own professional style when you teach in front of real students in a live classroom.

After each observed teaching session, I got very valuable comments from the TEFL trainers. In addition, they also presented us a challenge to address in the next teaching session. We were being coached for overall growth in each and every individual session as the practicum went on.

Doing my TEFL training at Vantage in Bangkok was a fantastic experience. Thai students are great: polite and fun to teach. Va

I was in for a big surprise. I had no idea what to expect when I signed up for my TEFL course. I did know I wanted to teach, but the only idea I had was from the experience I had in school many years ago. And that was I would stand up in front of a class a “lecture’ the lesson I was giving. So I figured it wouldn’t be too difficult to learn how to teach. And that my TEFL course would be a relatively easy class and not take too much time.

Boy was I was dead wrong. Teaching a language is much more about getting the students to speak—and motivating them to do the work.

The courses itself was intensive. There is a lot of material to cover and you will read pages outside preparing for the next session. I had to relearn a lot of grammar. And I was taught and tested on phonetics.

But besides that, it was very engaging—though challenging. But the bottom line was that I was taken out of my comfort zone. The end result was that I now have the teaching skills to effectively teach. I’m now 100% confident that I can walk into a classroom anywhere and teach pretty much anyone English.

The practicum of observed teaching practices is where I really blossomed. I got a lot of valuable feedback from the trainers, which made a big difference in my next teaching session

Vantage gave me a lot of individual support outside the classroom. Their Jobs Coach worked with me in a one-to- session where we crafted one of their Power Resumes. Something must have worked as the school that hired complemented me on my application saying it was one of the best CVs they had seen.

I would point anyone who’s serious about teaching English in Vantage’s direction. It’s a world-class program.
